Trayvon Martin was shot in Sanford, Florida, nearly a month ago after a confrontation in a gated community with a neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman. The president said the incident makes him think of his own children. He said Martin's parents "are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness that it deserves, and we're going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened."
"All of us have to do some soul-searching to figure out how does something like this happen," he continued. "And that means that we examine the laws and the context for what happened as well as the specifics of the incident."
This is a tragedy that should not have happened. So many people reported to 911 what they were hearing. So many people did nothing. Would it have made a difference if someone prayed for the crying boy's safety, if someone was brave enough, cared enough to yell to George Zimmerman, to leave the kid alone, to treat a legal, law abiding visitor to the neighborhood, with kindness and care? Would it have made a difference if someone had stepped up to the plate and told George Zimmerman to "stand back". Would it?..
We will never know because no one was brave enough to do so. Now a promising Aviation mechanic's life has been snuffed out. There is so much hurt going around right now. Could it have been avoided if Florida did not have that seemingly, outrageous, and ambiguous "Stand Your Ground" law? Who is safe?... Who is safe?
